German Leverlock Switchblades And Their Legacy

During post world war 2 period, Germany saw huge variety of folding knives. Majority of these switchblades were tailored for use by hunters and camp enthusiasts.

Generally, these knives were promoted with several German names such as Springer, Springmesser and more. Manufactured in millions, these switchblades traveled to places like Europe, South Africa, North America. Among U.S. outdoorsmen and collectors, this knife became popularly known as the German Leverlock Switchblades




It was a very popular knife that sold in great numbers; They were available in different scale materials, bolsters, sizes, and with various cutlery markings on the tang or blade. Many of the vintage Leverlocks also have 'SPRINGER' stamped on the bottom bolster, with mild modification in the letter’s size and style.

Industrialization led to development of new techniques of manufacturing and enabled creative innovation, to manufacture switchblades economically in series and to market at reasonable pricing.

The Leverlock model has a long history, with applicable German patents and patent registrations by Wilhelm Weltersbach , Otto Schallbruch, Anton Wingen Jr. ,and Günter O. Melcher to name a few.  With roughly a hundred known tang stamps, varieties of blade, lever shapes, myriad sizes, liners, bolster shapes, bolster shapes & stamps, bails, and groove markings; there is an immense variation in the Leverlock models.
