Here’s What You Can Do To Keep Your Knife Sharpened

Whether you wish to keep your knives sharpened or need to sharpen an old knife to make it new, you need to do some type of working for it. The sharpness of your knife is important for the quality of your work and also, the safety of everyone else in the workspace.

Here’s what you can do for your knife:

1. Own a honing road

Many people tend to believe that a honing rod is used to sharpen knives. Irrespective of the kind of knife you are using, be it a Boker switchblade for kitchen or any other, a honing rod is used more for alignment than anything else. Commonly known as stropping irons, a honing rod is helpful in straightening the metal of your knife without removing large amounts of metal from the blade of the knife.

2. Keep a dedicated knife-sharpening tool

There are many tool available in the market that are used for re-sharpening a dull blade such as the diamond bench stones, whetstones, power sharpeners, handheld diamond plate style sharpeners, jig and clamp styles and many more. The whetstone, also known as a water stone or sharpening stone has a relatively steep learning curve. The purpose of this tool is entirely different from a honing rod. Most of them have one or two sides- one rough and one fine. A whetstone can be bought in a range of grits that can help you achieve the ideal finish and polish for your knife. The higher the grit is, the smoother is the surface of the whetstone. You should be looking for a lower grit whetstone if you wish to erode a lot of metal particles and also repair some chipped edges.

3. Use the right surface

Once you have sharpened and straightened your knife, it is important to consider the way you treat your sharp Boker switchblades on a daily basis. The first question you need to ask is whether you are cutting on surfaces that could damage your knife or are you scraping it along the sharp edges in order to clear your work space of food and debris.
